Matt Price- Last Night a Weegie
Saved My Life
Cardiff - 27th July 2018
Anyone believe in déjà-vu (or just poor communication)? Last night I arrived at Sherman Theatre expecting to
see Stuart Goldsmith at 7.30pm only to be told that he would be running half an hour late. Fast forward one day
and I am in position even earlier, to enjoy a lovely pre-show meal of Tapas and Wine and guess what, yes I am
duly advised that Matt Price will be running half an hour late.
Unlike Mr Goldsmith yesterday Matt gently sauntered onto stage and immediately charmed the audience by
saying that as the show was very personal he would be ignoring the microphone instead using his natural voice
to communicate with us.
And we were off. We heard about his upbringing, his shyness, perceived stupidity and lack of personal esteem which ultimately lead to him getting involved in a less than satisfactory relationship.
By listing these issues in a matter of fact fashion it sounds rather cold but the opposite was true. It was all told with good humour, dotted with hysterical stories about his sleep-walking but all expressed without an element of self-pity. The climax of the show features a moving revelation which only makes you feel even more of a rapport with Matt.
Fortunately, these tales are woven around a highly engaging performer who has an impressive array of accents. This isn’t always an easy watch but if you want to see a show where you make an intimate connection with the perfomer I would recommend Matt Price: Last Night A Weegie Saved My Life.
Trust me there won’t be many shows in Edinburgh like this.
Matt Price: Last Night a Weegie Saved My Life plays at the Gilded Balloon Teviot from to 26th August (not 13th)
