The Big Bite-Size Breakfast Show

Pleasance Courtyard

Sunday 3rd August 10.30

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Darkchat have been coming to the Edinburgh festival since 2025. Not surprisingly, over that time a lot has changed, but, just occasionally, some things remain the same.

Amazingly, back in 2010, Darkchatter Katerina saw The Big Bite Size Breakfast show and just fifteen years later we are back. Even odder, is the fact that we are here today due to the recommendation of an old school friend who attends the Brighton festival and flags up shows he thinks we would like. This worked brilliantly last year as we went to see and loved " Ironing Board Man", a show I wouldn't have otherwise selected. Rule Number One of choosing a show at the Edinburgh festival , word of mouth choices are best.

And so for our first show of 2025 Darkchatters, David, Thuranie and myself found ourselves in a ridiculously early queue at 10.00am in a sunny (hurrah) and empty (amazingly) Pleasance Courtyard . Who isn't lured by the prospect of a coffee, croissant and a strawberry?

This was nice but what really mattered was what happened on stage. The concept of the show is that they produce fifteen small plays and perform five of them over three consecutive mornings.

Writing new plays is hard to discover that all five are of a high quality is quite remarkable. Almost as impressive is that the performances universally match the writing.

The stories revolve around a Ferris Wheel (no pun intended) , a food bank, a parcel delivery, a pre funeral get together and a American news channel. I think you will agree that is the definition of an eclectic mix.

The strength of the piece is that some are very funny, some are quite poignant and one in particular switches from one to another in a split second, thanks to a brilliantly moving piece of acting.

I always try to start our festival with a strong show and I certainly chose well today. I can now relax confident in the knowledge that this will be another excellent festival.

As you can tell the three of us loved it but I will the final word to a gentleman I sat next to. He always sees these shows and watches all fifteen of the plays. What better recommendation is there than that?
