Rob Auton: CAN (An Hour-Long Story)
Upstairs at Assembly Roxy
Monday 4th August 13.25
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
If anyone has been reading our reviews over a period of time you will know that we are big fans of Rob Auton. Having first seen him as a replacement act in a Free Show back in 2012 he has been a regular in our Spreadsheet ever since. We have acquired other favourite performers over the years but he is the only person whose name will ALWAYS find a place in our itinerary.
Previously he has produced shows around a particular theme, Yellow, Hair, Sky, Face etc. This year is a change from his usual style as he has written his first story show.
He is Can who believes in trying to help people in small ways without them knowing eg buying exercise weights, but not for his personal use. (If you want to know why, go and see the show).
If anyone sees Rob regularly they will notice a distinctive feature of his shows. He is determined that he, and us should enjoy the simple things in life, eg the madness and randomness of just being alive.
Previously he would start his shows at a certain level of energy and build to a dramatic and emotional ending. Today, he started at a high level of intensity, impressively maintaining that over the next hour until the end when he still manages to go up another level.
I am a huge fan and always enjoy seeing his shows but with Can I think he has surpassed his other shows. In case you get the feeling that it sounds rather worthy I can confirm that Rob is very, very funny with pathos and an important message thrown in for free.
Not only has Rob become a master performer (and I don't think there is anyone else doing what he does) what he says is also relevant. We don't take time to appreciate life, even the little things.
I saw him the day that Storm Floris hit Edinburgh, however if there is one performer I would risk my life to see it is Rob Auton. (And if that's not the quote for the poster nothing is!) (DC)
Rob Auton: CAN (An Hour-Long Story) is playing daily at Upstairs at Assembly Roxy until August 24th - details here
