Garden Party – Truman Capote's Black and White Celebration
Annexe at theSpace @ Symposium Hall

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Everyone who attends this show is invited to the – (possibly rather louche) – Black and White Ball that the (probably rather louche) Truman Capote hosted at New York’s Plaza Hotel in 1966.
As one might expect of such an event, the development is not linear and forever switches focus, facilitated by the two brilliant performers pulling the strings – by turns intimate, confrontational, unsettling and insinuatingly introducing and developing evidence for the case presented by one of Capote’s ‘non-fiction novels’ of a real-life crime.
Beyond this, I’ll go no deeper as there are some surprises here that are better not compromised by further explanation, but suffice to say that at its heart lies the conflict between the appearance of ourselves that we choose to present to the world and the darker desires that we deem it necessary to conceal.
Accompanying the piece are a constant, compelling soundscaping and some standout musical interludes that are hugely effective in supporting and expressing the changing dynamics working through the progression of the party. It is an all round fascinating, unpredictable, memorable and sensual experience. (DM)
