Courier

Playground 1 at ZOO Playground

Monday 4th August 17.45

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

A one man show about the life of Benny, a takeaway delivery cyclist, we see them everywhere right?  You might, or do they just pass and fade into the background of every day life, but just what goes on beneath the helmet? Piers Mackenzie (perhaps) gives us an insight with his one man show Courier.

It starts with Mackenzie (in full delivery gear, complete with those huge bags you see on their backs) already pedalling an exercise bike as the audience filter into the room, the bike along with a single chair are the only props on the stage.

The show is well acted, well directed and well put together, it’s a great example of what one man theatre at the Fringe can be. It also didn't do what I was expecting it to do which is always a bonus. Mackenzie performance as Benny (and others) is excellent, and he is one to keep an eye on in the future; he is word perfect across the hour (there was a point that I thought had misspoken, but given what later transpires it’s actually a slight reveal as to what is to come) and couples this with a physical performance that will see him have spectacular calves by the end of the run!

The room is small and a couple of the shows are already sold out so I'd recommend getting a ticket for this before you miss out completely.

And just to confirm that when you pay attention you do see these riders everywhere, the first thing I see as I leave the venue is another take-away rider battling the Edinburgh cobbles (and Storm Floris) just to deliver someone’s dinner; probably. (CB)
