A Jaffa Cake Musical

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
In 1991, the Inland Revenue took McVities Biscuits to court to establish that the iconic Jaffa Cake is not, in fact, a cake (ie tax free), but a biscuit, and therefore liable to VAT. The course of this court case was of vital interest to all lovers of Jaffa Cakes and this exuberant musical follows the story through the lives, friendship and rivalry of the opposing counsels.
The highly professional and talented cast deliver a uniformly lively performance, multi-tasking as musicians and bringing warmth and humour to the characters. Highlights are Sam Cochrane (who wrote the piece) playing the emotionally insecure Counsel for the Defence – Alex Prescott, indefatigable keyboard player, doubling as the Judge, Sabrina Messer in fine voice as the Prosecution Counsel and – perhaps the highlight – Katie Pritchard gives a show-stopping performance as the gleefully demonic Taxman – in between playing several instruments and other roles.
The creatively mobile set design deserves mention, evoking the courtroom in Jaffa Cake layers of colour from pale biscuit brown, to bright orange and dark chocolate.
This splendidly enjoyable show is selling out, so grab yourself a ticket while you can, to see this emotional, humorous and tuneful drama, which will have you pondering the question as you nibble on your Jaffa Cake: which side are you on? Is a Jaffa Cake really a cake – or a biscuit...? (TA)
